The Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck Super Fab Lab, in collaboration with the five other fab labs in the country, hosted the FabFest on 23rd May 2024, the first one to be organized by the Bhutan Fab Lab Network. With a theme of "Assistive Technology" aimed at promoting accessibility and inclusivity, the Fab Fest, funded by the Bhutan Foundation, featured workshops and the development of assistive devices. This annual event is dedicated to fostering inclusivity across the nation through hands-on workshops and innovative assistive technology solutions.

The JNW Super FabLab and the other FabLabs developed prototypes to demonstrate the potential for locally-made assistive technologies, including a robotic arm, an Aid watch and 3D-printed Assistive Devices. This addressed the challenge of limited domestic options. Imported technologies often need customization, but the Fab Fest aimed to demonstrate the viability of creating and adapting these tools within Bhutan. Assistive technology benefits everyone, not just those in SEN schools. As we age, many of us will encounter situations where these tools can improve our independence and quality of life.

The inspiration for the Fab Fest came from the success of the FAB23, the global Fab Lab Network conference held in the country last year. Notably, the Fab Bhutan Challenge, a key aspect of FAB23, aimed to integrate local Fab Labs and grassroots initiatives. The challenge culminated in a public showcase, highlighting the potential for locally-driven innovation. As a result, Bhutan established the annual Fab Fest to empower local innovators. Each year, a different Fab Lab will spearhead the event, focusing on a specific theme to drive innovation and foster community engagement.
